The short version of lyophilised powder fits in a sentence. The long version — which is the one that helps — is below.
This page was last updated on 2026-05-12 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
The most frequently cited identity is a seven-residue fragment with the sequence LKKTETQ, taken from the actin-binding domain of the parent protein. A separate molecule, N-acetyl-seryl-aspartyl-lysyl-proline, often shortened to Ac-SDKP, derives from the same protein's N-terminal region and appears in overlapping literature. Reported molecular masses therefore differ between sources, and a mass value on its own does not establish which fragment is present. Confirmation requires a defined sequence rather than a single number.
Research interest in thymosin beta-4 fragments centres on actin sequestration, cell migration and tissue repair models. Most published work uses cultured cells or animal wound and cardiac preparations, and findings are generally described as preliminary. No fragment of this protein has been approved as a therapeutic product by major regulators. Reviews of the field note inconsistent dosing, delivery routes and outcome measures across studies, which complicates direct comparison. The material is best understood as a laboratory reagent with an active but unresolved research literature.
No major regulatory agency has approved TB-500 for therapeutic use, and it holds no pharmacopoeial monograph. The name appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list within the class covering peptide hormones, growth factors, and related substances. Detection in doping control relies on mass spectrometric methods applied to urine, often after preparation steps that concentrate the analyte. Discussion of TB-500 therefore clusters in biochemistry, sports medicine, and anti-doping literature rather than in registered clinical trials.
TB-500 is a synthetic peptide preparation marketed under a name derived from thymosin beta-4, a 43-residue actin-binding protein first isolated from thymus tissue. The full-length protein has a reported molecular mass near 4963 Da, while material sold as TB-500 is often described as a fragment containing the actin-binding motif LKKTETQ. Because suppliers use the name inconsistently, published sources sometimes refer to the same label as a fragment, a synthetic copy, or a related analog. This naming ambiguity complicates direct comparison of reports across studies.
Laboratory work on thymosin beta-4 describes binding to monomeric actin and effects on cell migration, angiogenesis, and inflammatory signaling in cultured cells. Animal models have examined skin, corneal, and cardiac repair after injury, with outcomes reported mainly in preclinical literature. Most of that evidence concerns the parent protein rather than preparations labelled TB-500, so extrapolation from animal findings to a specific commercial product remains uncertain. Whether the two behave identically in living systems has not been established in controlled human studies.

The seven-residue chain carries several polar and charged side chains, so it dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers near neutral pH. No cysteine is present, so disulphide formation is not a concern and reducing agents are unnecessary. Dilute ammonium hydroxide or acetonitrile-water mixtures are sometimes used for stock solutions when initial dissolution is slow. Strongly alkaline conditions and prolonged contact with oxidising agents are avoided because they can modify lysine-containing stretches, and haze in solution usually signals incomplete dissolution or aggregated material.
Identity and purity are checked with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target sequence from truncated or deletion analogues, and with mass spectrometry, which confirms the expected molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping give orthogonal confirmation but are used less often outside specialist laboratories. Counter-ion content varies: material purified on trifluoroacetic acid gradients retains trifluoroacetate, and ion exchange can convert the salt form. Residual water and solvent are measured by Karl Fischer titration or thermogravimetric analysis, and any purity figure should be read together with the method used to obtain it.
Sports authorities classify the peptide as a prohibited substance, and it appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency list under peptide hormones, growth factors, and related substances. Racing jurisdictions for horses and dogs have issued separate restrictions, and several national bodies treat it as a controlled or prescription-only item. As a research chemical it is sold without a therapeutic indication, and labels usually state that the product is not for human or veterinary use. Regulatory treatment therefore varies by country.
Detection in biological matrices generally relies on liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, because the peptide lacks a convenient ultraviolet chromophore beyond the amide backbone. Immunoassays have been described, but antibodies raised against the fragment can cross-react with the full-length protein or with unrelated peptides, so findings usually require confirmation by a second technique. Sample preparation typically involves protein precipitation followed by solid-phase extraction. Reported detection windows depend on dose, route, matrix, and instrument sensitivity.

=== Food additive === Silica gel, also referred to as silicon dioxide or synthetic amorphous silica (SAS), is listed by the FDA in the United States as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), meaning it can be added to food products without needing approval. Silica is allowed to be added to food in the US at up to 2% as permitted under 21 CFR 172.480. In the EU, it can be in up to 5% concentrations. In 2018, a re-evaluation by the EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food found no indications of toxicity even at the highest estimates of exposure level. Listed uses include: anticaking agent, defoaming agent, stabilizer, adsorbent, carrier, conditioning agent, chill proofing agent, filter aid, emulsifying agent, viscosity control agent, and anti-settling agent. Silica can be found commonly in foods including baked goods, spices and herbs, dairy products, cocoa products, and more.
Many of the early X-ray and radioactivity researchers went down in history as "martyrs for science." In her article, The Miracle and the Martyrs, Sarah Zobel of the University of Vermont tells of a 1920 banquet held to honor many of the pioneers of X-rays. Chicken was served for dinner: "Shortly after the meal was served, it could be seen that some of the participants were unable to enjoy the meal. After years of working with X-rays, many of the participants had lost fingers or hands due to radiation exposure and were unable to cut the meat themselves". The first American to die from radiation exposure was Clarence Madison Dally (1845-1904), an assistant to Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Edison began studying X-rays almost immediately after Röntgen's discovery and delegated the task to Dally. Over time, Dally underwent more than 100 skin operations due to radiation damage. Eventually, both of his arms had to be amputated. His death led Edison to abandon all further X-ray research in 1904. One of the pioneers was the Austrian Gustav Kaiser (1871-1954), who in 1896 succeeded in photographing a double toe with an exposure time of 1½-2 hours. Due to the limited knowledge at the time, he also suffered severe radiation damage to his hands, losing several fingers and his right metacarpal. His work was the basis for, among other things, the construction of lead rubber aprons. Heinrich Albers-Schönberg (1865-1921), the world's first professor of radiology, recommended gonadal protection for testicles and ovaries in 1903.
== Synthesis == Endorphin precursors are primarily produced in the pituitary gland. All three types of endorphins are fragments of the precursor protein proopiomelanocortin (POMC). At the trans-Golgi network, POMC binds to a membrane-bound protein, carboxypeptidase E (CPE). CPE facilitates POMC transport into immature budding vesicles. In mammals, proprotein convertase 1 (PC1) cleaves POMC into adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and beta-lipotropin (β-LPH). β-LPH, a pituitary hormone with little opioid activity, is then continually fragmented into different peptides, including α-endorphin, β-endorphin, and γ-endorphin. Proprotein convertase 2 (PC2) is responsible for cleaving β-LPH into β-endorphin and γ-lipotropin. Formation of α-endorphin and γ-endorphin results from proteolytic cleavage of β-endorphin.
== Interactions == Besides integrin, fibronectin binds to many other host and non-host molecules. For example, it has been shown to interact with proteins such fibrin, tenascin, TNF-α, BMP-1, rotavirus NSP-4, and many fibronectin-binding proteins from bacteria (like FBP-A; FBP-B on the N-terminal domain), as well as the glycosaminoglycan, heparan sulfate. pUR4 is a recombinant peptide that is known to inhibit the polymerization of fibronectin in a number of cell types including fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Fibronectin has been shown to interact with:

== Pathophysiology == GPS is caused by abnormal plasma cell production of anti-GBM antibodies. The major target of these abnormal antibodies is the non-collagen domain of the alpha-3 chain of type 4 collagen, which is mostly found in the basal membranes of glomerular and alveolar capillaries, explaining the obscurely specific symptoms of this condition. This preferred targeting of these alpha-3 collagen chains specifically in the basal membranes of glomerular and alveolar capillaries can be explained by the higher accessible exposure of epitopes, a larger expansion of the alpha-3 collagen units, and because these alpha-3 collagen chains structurally provide higher accessibility for the targeting antibodies. These antibodies bind their reactive epitopes to the basement membranes and activate the complement cascade, leading to the death of tagged cells. A specific antibody and epitope binding that shows the highest affinity and is pathogenic occurs between GPA antibodies and the anti-GBM epitope region, designated EA, which is residues 17–31 of the alpha 3 subunit of non-collagenous domain of type IV collagen. T cells are also implicated, though it is generally considered a type II hypersensitivity reaction.
== Biopolymers versus synthetic polymers == A major defining difference between biopolymers and synthetic polymers can be found in their structures. All polymers are made of repetitive units called monomers. Biopolymers often have a well-defined structure, though this is not a defining characteristic (example: lignocellulose): The exact chemical composition and the sequence in which these units are arranged is called the primary structure, in the case of proteins. Many biopolymers spontaneously fold into characteristic compact shapes (see also "protein folding" as well as secondary structure and tertiary structure), which determine their biological functions and depend in a complicated way on their primary structures. Structural biology is the study of the structural properties of biopolymers. In contrast, most synthetic polymers have much simpler and more random (or stochastic) structures. This fact leads to a molecular mass distribution that is missing in biopolymers. In fact, as their synthesis is controlled by a template-directed process in most in vivo systems, all biopolymers of a type (say one specific protein) are all alike: they all contain similar sequences and numbers of monomers and thus all have the same mass. This phenomenon is called monodispersity in contrast to the polydispersity encountered in synthetic polymers. As a result, biopolymers have a dispersity of 1.
As a consequence of the initial competing claims of discovery, an element naming controversy arose. Since the Soviets claimed to have first detected the new element they suggested the name kurchatovium (Ku) in honor of Igor Kurchatov (1903–1960), former head of Soviet nuclear research. This name had been used in books of the Soviet Bloc as the official name of the element. The Americans, however, proposed rutherfordium (Rf) for the new element to honor New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford, who is known as the "father" of nuclear physics. In 1992, the IUPAC/IUPAP Transfermium Working Group (TWG) assessed the claims of discovery and concluded that both teams provided contemporaneous evidence to the synthesis of element 104 in 1969, and that credit should be shared between the two groups. In particular, this involved the TWG performing a new retrospective reanalysis of the Russian work in the face of the later-discovered fact that there is no 0.3-second isotope of element 104: they reinterpreted the Dubna results as having been caused by a spontaneous fission branch of 259Rf. The American group wrote a scathing response to the findings of the TWG, stating that they had given too much emphasis on the results from the Dubna group. In particular they pointed out that the Russian group had altered the details of their claims several times over a period of 20 years, a fact that the Russian team does not deny.
Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from microbial cells (e.g., recombinant E. coli or yeast cultures), mammalian cell lines (see Cell culture) and plant cell cultures (see Plant tissue culture) and moss plants in bioreactors of various configurations, including photo-bioreactors. Important issues of concern are cost of production (low-volume, high-purity products are desirable) and microbial contamination (by bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma). Alternative platforms of production which are being tested include whole plants (plant-made pharmaceuticals).

The solubility of calcium sulfate decreases as temperature increases. This behaviour ("retrograde solubility") is uncommon: dissolution of most of the salts is endothermic and their solubility increases with temperature. The retrograde solubility of calcium sulfate is also responsible for its precipitation in the hottest zone of heating systems and for its contribution to the formation of scale in boilers along with the precipitation of calcium carbonate whose solubility also decreases when CO2 degasses from hot water or can escape out of the system.
==== Resignation of Guido Bellido ==== Citing instability in the country, Pedro Castillo announced that Prime Minister Guido Bellido had resigned during a surprise message in state television. Bellido's status as prime minister was controversial from the start of his tenure. Leaders from the Congressional opposition welcomed Castillo's decision to replace Bellido.
Malonylation occurs mainly in mitochondria but also in the cytosol and nucleus. In mouse liver, about 60% of malonylated proteins are mitochondrial, whereas in human fibroblasts the distribution is more even. Succinylation and glutarylation are likewise enriched in mitochondria but not exclusive to them. The relative abundance of these modifications reflects acyl-CoA availability: acetylation is most common, succinylation reaches 10–30 % of acetylation levels, malonylation is at least tenfold less frequent, and glutarylation occurs only in trace amounts. In addition to their differing frequencies, malonylation, succinylation, and acetylation can also target the same lysine site. In mouse liver mitochondria, about 85 % of succinylation sites overlap with at least one of these modifications, and ~6 % can contain all three, mainly in proteins involved in fatty acid oxidation, glutaryl-CoA degradation, and ketogenesis. In contrast, only 55 % of malonylation sites overlap with succinylation, while about 45 % are unique. These distinct patterns suggest a specific regulatory role for malonylation among lysine acyl modifications.
==== Potassium ==== A sodium load augments the intense potassium excretion by cortisol. Corticosterone is comparable to cortisol in this case. For potassium to move out of the cell, cortisol moves an equal number of sodium ions into the cell. This should make pH regulation much easier (unlike the normal potassium-deficiency situation, in which two sodium ions move in for each three potassium ions that move out—closer to the deoxycorticosterone effect).
Extremely strong: Histamine H1 receptor Strong: α1-adrenergic receptor, 5-HT2A and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors Moderate: 5-HT2C and 5-HT1A receptors Weak: α2-adrenergic and D2 receptors Based on its IC50Tooltip half-maximal inhibitory concentration values for monoamine reuptake inhibition, doxepin is relatively selective for the inhibition of norepinephrine reuptake, with a much weaker effect on the serotonin transporter. Although there is a significant effect that takes place at one of the specific serotonergic binding sites, the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor subtype. There is negligible influence on dopamine reuptake. The major metabolite of doxepin, nordoxepin (desmethyldoxepin), is pharmacologically active similarly, but relative to doxepin, is much more selective as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. In general, the demethylated variants of tertiary amine TCAs like Nortriptyline, Desipramine and nordoxepin are much more potent inhibitors of norepinephrine reuptake, less potent inhibitors of serotonin reuptake, and less potent in their antiadrenergic, antihistamine, and anticholinergic activities. Antidepressant doses of doxepin are defined as 25 to 300 mg/day, although are typically above 75 mg/day. Antihistamine doses, including for dermatological uses and as a sedative/hypnotic for insomnia, are considered to be 3 to 25 mg, although higher doses between 25 and 50 mg and in some cases even up to 150 mg have been used to treat insomnia. At low doses, below 25 mg, doxepin is a pure antihistamine and has more of a sedative effect.

TB-500 is a trade-style label for a synthetic peptide connected to thymosin beta-4. It is sold mainly through research-chemical channels and is not a single chemically defined product across suppliers.
Not necessarily. Some vendors use the name for the full 43-residue protein, while others apply it to a short actin-binding fragment or to a related tetrapeptide. The sequence should be confirmed from documentation rather than assumed from the label.
No thymosin beta-4 fragment holds marketing approval as a medicine in major jurisdictions. Material offered for sale is typically labelled for laboratory research only.
Not necessarily. TB-500 is a commercial label that suppliers apply to synthetic peptides described as thymosin beta-4 or a fragment of it. Published research most often studies the full-length protein, so statements about one do not automatically transfer to the other.
